You can expect the same personalized, family-centered midwifery care at our birthing center as you would in a planned home birth.
Both options are comparable in safety for healthy, low-risk pregnancies.
The birthing center may offer an added layer of reassurance for families who live farther from a hospital with 24-hour obstetric services.

The  birthing center is  your

home  away  from  home - designed for safety, comfort, and peace of mind.

Birthing  Center /Home  Birth  equivalents:

  • Licensed Midwife (LM, CPM) providing the same training, skills, and attentive care
  • The same equipment, medications, and emergency preparedness
  • Short  immediate  postpartum  stay

Birthing  Center/Home  Birth  differences:

  • Birthing center is closer to EMS and hospital services
  • Midwife is located near the center for rapid access
  • Center  has  plumbed  tubs large  enough  for  water  birth  with  tankless  hot  water  heater - No setup or refill delays
  • Automated full house generator for uninterrupted care
  • Center  requires  less  “supplies  to  have on hand” such as linens, towels,  receiving  blankets ect..

Early labor is spent in the comfort of your home, and your midwife will provide specific guidelines for when to call.
Active labor is typically defined as at least 6 cm dilation with strong, regular contractions.

During Labor
Fetal heart rate is monitored using a Doppler with intermittent monitoring.
You’re encouraged to eat and hydrate throughout labor.

Our cozy kitchenette and lounge offer filtered water, coffee, tea, light snacks, and include a refrigerator for your food and drinks.

Birth doulas are required for first-time natural birthing families. Doulas provide early and active labor support, ensuring continuous guidance and allowing your midwife team to arrive rested, focused, and ready for delivery.

Immediate Postpartum and Newborn Care
Once your baby is born, we honor the sacred mother-baby bonding period.
Your midwives will monitor both you and your baby closely and non-invasively while encouraging prolonged skin-to-skin contact.

At It’s Your Birth, true delayed cord clamping is our standard-typically waiting until after placenta delivery to ensure your baby receives their full volume of cord blood.
When you’re ready, your chosen support person may assist in cutting the cord under your midwife’s guidance.

Your midwife will examine you for any tears and offer suturing if needed.
A complete newborn exam follows, including vitals, measurements, reflexes, and weight.

Discharge

The birthing center is a short-term postpartum stay, averaging 2-3 hours after delivery. Before discharge, clients must meet specific criteria and have an installed infant car seat ready for transport.
We recommend that all families have their car seat checked by a certified safety technician before delivery.

Postpartum Care
Your postpartum schedule includes follow-up visits for both mother and baby at:
~ Day 1
~ Weeks 1, 2, 4, and 6

All visits are held at the birthing center. Your first visit is typically scheduled the day after birth, with timing determined by your delivery time and midwife availability.

Your midwives remain available by phone or through your client portal for questions during the first six weeks.

The Newborn Screening (NBS) is offered at your Day 1 visit and includes:

  •  Metabolic screening (blood spot collection)
  •  CCHD pulse-oximetry reading
  •  Hearing screening (offered within the first two weeks)

It’s Your Birth also offers the blood spot portion of the NBS through Revvity, a private laboratory option.

Prolonged skin to skin is encouraged. True delayed cord clamping is our normal. When you are ready for the umbilical cord to be cut, your midwife will assist whomever you choose in doing so.

Your midwife will check you for tears and if required, suturing will be offered.

A thorough newborn examination is performed checking  vitals, measurements, reflexes and weight.

While you are bonding with your baby, we will continue to monitor everyone's well being. We also help with breastfeeding as needed.  Before departing, clean up is completed and everyone will be stable and tucked into bed.

The Postpartum schedule is:

Day 1

Week 1, 2, 4 and 6.

Postpartum visits always include both Mom and baby.

All appointments are scheduled in clinic.

Your midwives are available via phone or client portal if there are any questions during the 6 weeks  after your birth.

The newborn screening (NBS) will be offered at the day 1 visit. There are three different parts of the newborn screen. The metabolic screening blood spot collection and CCHD pulse ox reading are offered as close to 24 hours post birth as possible. A hearing screening is offered within the first 2 weeks after birth. It's Your Birth provides all three parts of the newborn screening for clients.

It's Your Birth also offers the blood spot portion of the NBS through Revvity, a private lab, for those who desire this option. For more information of the state of Michigan NBS, follow the link:
